International Women of Yorkton and Area Activities for April - July 2017

The Yorkton Newcomer Welcome Centre will continue to offer monthly activities to newcomer women who are interested to attend fun and informative activities. The activities or "get together", as it is fondly called, are geared towards newcomer women, 18 years of age and over, to experience 1-2 hours of interaction not only with newcomers but also with Canadian women. The goal is to share cultural commonalities and differences, experience the Canadian culture, and develop friendships amongst the participants. Almost all activities are free admission or at very minimal cost. This program has been going since 2009. 

Listed below are the scheduled activities for this quarter. Pre-registration is required:

April 21 - Easter Egg Hunt - open to children and their whole family. Children must be accompanied by their parents or guardians  (Dr. Brass School school yard)

May 17 - Yoga - for women only (Parkland Abilities Centre, 162 Ball Road, Yorkton)

June - Mexican Night - open to women and families (venue TBA)

July  - Strawberry picking for the whole family (Prairie Dome Farm)

Partners in Settlement and Integration Satellite Office Schedule for April - June 2017  

Partners in Settlement and Integration (Yorkton Newcomer Welcome Centre) started providing free settlement and integration services to newcomers and immigrants in the east central Saskatchewan region in September 2008. Each year, the Centre provides service to around 1000 immigrants. The Centre covers 150-km radius area around Yorkton which is a fairly large area. In many instances newcomers are not able to access the services because of the distance and transportation challenges. To address these issues, the Centre staff travels to at least 10 larger centres in the region to hold satellite office with the purpose of meeting with clients. The Satellite Office schedule is distributed by email or posted online through the Partners in Settlement and Integration website and PSI's Facebook page.

The following is the schedule and location of the Satellite Offices:

April 21 - Melville (Melville Community Works - 10am to 2 pm)

May 9   - Churchbridge; May 17 - Esterhazy; May 23 - Invermay

June 13 - Kamsack; June 27 - Preeceville

Partners in Settlement and Integration Community Outreach Schedule for April - June 2017

Community awareness of the services provided by Partners in Settlement and Integration (PSI) has become one of the priorities of the Centre. It is of utmost importance that the services reach each newcomer and immigrant in the region to meet the objective of the program. To meet this priority, the centre will again provide Community Outreach throughout its service area which will include the smallest to the biggest centres. The centre staff will target various institutions, agencies, businesses, organizations and groups to distributed print materials as well as a provide short orientation of the services which newcomers can avail at the Centre. Employers will also be approached to give them information regarding pre-settlement and settlement needs of their newcomer employees.

The schedule for Outreach for this quarter is as follows:

April 20 - Grenfell/Broadview/Whitewood/Crooked Lake; April 13 - Yorkton

May 25 - Esterhazy/Dubuc/Stockholm/Gerard/Bangor; May 11 - Yorkton

June 22 - Melville/Neudorff/Lemberg/Abernathy/Birmingham; June 8- Yorkton

Starting a Business in Saskatchewan for Newcomers

Partners in Settlement and Integration is offering a forum for newcomers in the region on May 25, 2017 at the Yorkton Newcomer Welcome Centre. Starting a Business in Saskatchewan for Newcomers forum is on it's 4th year. Participants will hear from speakers who will provide information on business planning, requirements and procedure in starting a business in the region, capital sources, labour standards and newcomers who owns businesses in the area. The previous forums resulted in several participants starting their own businesses which have been successful. The speakers will also be available for questions during and after the session. 

The forum will take place at the Yorkton Newcomer Welcome Centre, 222 Smith St. E, Yorkton on May 25, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Interested newcomers are advised to pre-register by May 23, 2017 by calling 306.783.2777 or email psiyorkton@abilitiescouncil.sk.ca.

Yorkton Festival of Cultures 2017

Preparation for the annual Yorkton Festival of Cultures has began. The festival will be on November 26, 2017 at the Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton. The Yorkton Newcomer Welcome Centre staff has started recruiting newcomer groups to organize their cultural booths and performances. Participation from established cultural groups such as the First Nations, Metis, and others are also being pursued. "We would like to have participation not only from newcomers but also the established groups who has been here for a long time", said Edith Montesclaros, Settlement Senior Supervisor of the centre. "The community gets excited when there are many cultures represented because they not only get to enjoy numerous authentic ethnic food and performances but they get to meet people of various nationalities". The objective of the event is to provide an enjoyable and educational venue for the newcomers and the community to interact and foster inclusion, diversity and multiculturalism. 

Volunteers are very important to the yearly success of this event. To volunteer, please contact Edith Montesclaros or any of the centre staff.
